"Heavy discounts are bad for gamers"

"Heavy discounts are bad for gamers". That's what GOG managing director Guillaume Rambourg recently told our friends Rock, Paper, Shotgun in a recent interview.

If a gamer buys a game he or she doesn't want just because it's on sale, they're being trained to make bad purchases, and they're also learning that games aren't valuable."

What about GOG's awesome sales? Rambourg explained how they differ from the insane sales that Steam parade during popular times of the year, particularly their Christmas sales.

Our average sale tends to be around 40% – 50% off; that's plenty of incentive to pick up a game if you're interested or if you just think you might like to try it because you're not sure about the game, but not some crazy 75% or 85% discount that damages the long-term value of a game."

We can kind of see his point, but when the sales are calling, we simply must BUY ALL THE GAMES!

True.. Few games I bought on steam for 75% off I still haven't played only bought them cause they were like $2 :P
i didnt need to be trained to make bad purchases
I purchased Duke Nukem at full price that was a bad purchase. [Facepalm]
I buy games I want in the steam sales, I only got Terraria last Christmas, there was nothing else good which I didn't already have, just mostly indie games I'd never heard of.
Super crazy sales sometimes are fine, like the Steam Christmas Sale. But if you were to have those prices every month or something, gamers would get used to buying at that price. Like Rambourg said, 50% off is definitely enough incentive for me to grab a game from GOG, especially considering the game was probably either $5 or $10 at full price anyway.
Hmm I am not really sure what he's saying here.

He's critical of sales because the make people make bad purchases, or, otherwise known as, spontaneous purchases?

That's the point of a sale. To move products that couldn't otherwise be sold, or to increase sales at a busy retail period.

Guy seems anti-business.
I read somewhere on the Steam forum that if a game is discounted to cheap chips amount, their sales can skyrocket by over 500% because of the increased volume of people who buy it. There's good business there :P The dude is just ragging on other companies who constantly discount games.

He did say that it was bad for gamers specifically, not that it was bad for everyone.

It's bad for gamers because they a) spend money on stuff they never play, and b) that money may encourage the development of games that are not very good, since those are the kinds of games that usually get huge discounts.
