Icebuntu Alpha 2 released, will suffer name change

The Icebuntu Alpha 2 is now available for download from the IceBuntu website

Icebuntu is a faster, slimmed down version of Ubuntu designed to run on older hardware. It replaces alot of heavy-weight applications of ubuntu with lighter-weight versions. The Gnome GUI interface is replaced with IceWM (Ice Window Manager). The download is a mere 371 megabytes.

The creator has reported that IceBuntu's name will have to change within the next month or so as Canonical own the rights to the name "Ubuntu" and any "*buntu" variants. He is taking considerations for the new name from any users that are willing to submit serious names.

Icebuntu Alpha 2 released, will suffer name change Comments

Wow. People make these distros like it's supposed to be hard to change the window manager in this distro. X, K, flux, ice. They'll probably make another distro using openbox soon.

Edit: What open platform doesn't allow you rights to the name? Ubuntu philosophy fail.

Yeah I know it's all open-sourced but still has huge backing from Canonical which, in turn, owns all the rights to the name.
They could always go with a catchy name like 'Crystal Meth'. This distro sounds like it's doing the 'lightweight' thing right. Xubuntu is still packed full of all the applications that come with Ubuntu so you would require an unreasonable amount of RAM to run the thing properly regardless (experience). I did try fluxbuntu, but fluxbox is far from comfortable for any user to possible consider using all the time, it's just to unconventional.

Another update, they did change the name. It is now called Spri. You can still download icebuntu while they redevelop the themes and artwork for the Spri release.

Hey that's a pretty good name Yeah I don't like flux either, it seems a bit unstable and XFCE is nice and light but I know what you mean by putting heavy apps back in there, it kinda defeats the purpose.
