Molyneux's next game features a $78,000 DLC pack

by Stephen Heller Featured 23 Comments 30 Votes 978 Views 08/06/2012 Back to News

A couple of weeks ago we caught wind of Peter Molyneux's plans to release 22 Experiments under his new studio 22 Cans. While the original news was quite vague, to the point that a release platform wasn't even announced, today we have confirmation that Molyneux has lost his mind.

Curiosity is coming to PC and mobile platforms in approximately six weeks, and will be the first of 22 experiments that will eventually shape the final design of 22 Cans' first release.

The game will place all players in the same virtual room containing a single black cube, with users tapping away at it causing fractures. Eventually the cube will crack open, revealing something truly awesome inside, and the person who delivers the final blow will get to keep that item.

Players will be able to purchase in-game chisels of varying strength and price to increase their power and chance of being the person who cracks open the cube. While iron chisels are affordable, there is one diamond chisel that will cost $78,293 AUD.

It's an insane amount of money. This is not a money-making exercise; it is a test about the psychology of monetisation." - Peter Moluneux, 22 Cans

Molydeux, can you do something about this insanity?

I will buy it [MOG]
This guy has actually lost the plot.
Consumed with hatred by the slow downward spiral of the Fable franchise, Peter Molyneux resolves to drive his studio using the proceeds from DLC while he develops his newest game.

So basically, in other words, "let's make this one item cost $78k lol, see if anyone is dumb enough to buy it [trollface.jpg]"
I actually find this pretty funny. I very highly doubt anyone is going to buy it, considering the popularity of the game is more than likely going to be low. Would be extremely interesting to try something like this in CoD or Halo though.
Umm.... I don't geddit?
lol, I want a Normal Axe, how much Moly ?
I didn't get it at first either, I'll help you guys out.

Purchase with real money. Like buying avatar gear off the XBL marketplace, only you're buying chisels to try and crack the black cube first.
But why?

Will the "pize" be the worlds hottest girl coming to my house to pleasure me in ways that have to be illegal in most countries? [MOG]
*Takes out a bank loan*

Who would actually buy this?????

Hey i'm totally in tears right now after reading that.
Ok, so you don't have to pay 78k, it still seems stupid to me though.
sooo whats the idea of the game
I dunno, but you can bet the actual game will be a lot crappier.
That's it, that's the game. Once someone breaks the box, it's over. The diamond pickaxe is unique though, so once you get it it's over. (*)
Im sure they'll sell big in the US [Facepalm]
diamond chisel selling for that much? O_o well idk i bet someone out there will buy it. its a big world and chances are one person will buy it. but thats just my opinion. i think the most expensive thing i ever saw in dlc was the special ring for that special someone in TF2 man co. store. $99.99 USD.
Someone will buy it.. Cause thered be a person that will have the money and want to brag about it :P
