Are you a Linux user? We have some exciting news for you son, you may want to sit down. Gabe Newell and his merry band of Valve employees have decided that you too will enjoy fantastic gaming, with an announcement that Steam is coming to your open-source computer platform!
Showing off a working prototype to Linux blog Phoronix, Valve have a working prototype that is far beyond "development" stages, and Gabe is somehwat of an evangelist for the operating system.
Valve are taking Linux seriously; Newell is actively involved in the development, and they are currently hiring more staff to work on the project, Here is a quote from Phoronix's article surrounding the exciting news.
“I am still struck by just how interested Valve is in Linux as a platform; it is certainly beyond my original expectations. This Linux work just is not some half-assed attempt by them to make it look like they are a Linux-friendly organisation. Gabe’s vision to support, embrace, and promote Linux are amazing, assuming they execute, which looks to be very high probability at this point.”
The Linux version of Steam will launch with Left 4 Dead, with plans for more games in the future.
