Steam remote downloading

by MyFragian Featured 10 Comments 20 Votes 673 Views 02/05/2012 Back to News

Steam today released a beta client that has one very interesting and useful feature 'Remote Downloads'.

The remote download feature allows users to log into their steam account via the steam website on any pc or phone and initiate downloads on your home PC or MAC. For this to function your home system needs to be on and the steam client running.

The steps to use the feature once you have downloaded the beta client are as follows:

1. Log into your Steam account online from your computer or mobile device at www.steampowered.com

2. Visit your Games list by navigating to the Community and then clicking GAMES in the secondary navigation bar. If you’re logged into the Steam client, the games list will reflect the installation state of your library on that machine.

3. Locate your game and tap the install button to initiate your remote download.

Steam appear to be having some issues at the current time and you may not be able to use the remote download feature straight away, as it is still a beta this is expected.

About time this was implemented. I've been hankering for this for a long time.

Yeah same =D
This is good when I'm stuck in the kitchen *insert women joke here* but seriously when I'm stuck in the kitchen :P
It'd probably be quicker to just walk into the other room and start the download there :P
But, what's the point? I mean, if you have to be logged into Steam on the PC to do it, why not just click download when you're logging in? :S

It would be good when your at work/school and a game is released that didn't have a pre-load like many dont, you can just start it off so it will be ready when you get home :)
Also if your at work and you have an urge to play a certain game you dont have installed you can just start it off so its ready when you get home.
Yeah, but you have to be logged in before hand.

I don't know about you, but I don't get up in the morning before work, turn the PC on, open Steam and then leave. :S
I normally wake up in the morning and turn my PC off :P
I only leave my PC if I need it for some reason. In that case I would just Teamviewer onto it
I guess if you don't turn your computer off, ever, and can't wait the few hours-ish it'll take you to get home, this might be useful, but it isn't to me. Especially if there's no remote uninstallation tool so I can remotely get rid of crap I'm not playing to remotely download games, because I'm too important to do so at home.
