An MMO based on the popular and long-established Elder Scrolls roleplaying fantasy series has been rumoured and anticipated for some time. Today it has been officially announced that the project is indeed real, and that it will be unveiled in detail in the June issue of Game Informer.
The Elder Scrolls Online is set a millennium before the events of Skyrim. The plot revolves around the daedric prince Molag Bal and his attempts to merge Tamriel into his demonic realm.
The Game Informer cover features the map of Tamriel and its various continents such as Skyrim, Morrowind, Elsweyr, and Cyrodiil, lending credence to the full landscape of The Elder Scrolls being available to players in the game.
The game will support both solo-questing and player-driven PVP conflict that will see three player factions battling it out in "open-world warfare over the province of Cyrodiil and the Emperor's throne itself", according to Game Informer.
The Elder Scrolls Online is being developed by Zenimax Online Studios. The studio's game director, Matt Firor is an experienced MMO veteran, having worked on Mythic's well-received title, Dark Age of Camelot.
"It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years," said Firor, indicating the title has been in progress for some time. "The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise."
Tomorrow will see a brief teaser trailer from Zenimax Online and Bethesda Softworks as well as the first screenshot of the game. The Elder Scrolls Online is scheduled for release in 2013 for both PC and Mac.
