Blizzard have already publicly admitted that Diablo 3 has no end-game, so in an attempt to combat the lull players have received when reaching level 60, they have added a new layer of levels.
The Paragon System adds 100 additional levels for hack 'n' slashers to click through after reaching the level cap. As of the 1.0.4 update, all experience earned after level 60 will be pout towards the new Paragon levels, each giving player a boost in core stats, along with a 3% boost in magic and gold finds.
It can be demoralizing to play for an hour, not get any drops, and also be out a big chunk of gold from repair costs. Your play session may not only end without an upgrade, it can wind up being a net loss. We know that a lot of you out there are level 60 – maybe on multiple characters – and this system provides a way to make progress every time you log in to the game." - Jay Wilson, Blizzard
