Dishonored developer criticises sequel saturation

Dishonored executive producer, Julien Roby, has responded to claims made by Electronic Arts' Frank Gibeau that releasing new game franchises this late in the console cycle is too risky, saying gamers are becoming tired of playing so many sequels.

While Mr Roby acknowledged that "as long as the game is good" people "will want to look at it", it didn't necessarily mean that saturating the market with sequels was a good direction for the industry. He said that if "it gets a good review and it's marketed propertly", it's probably going to be a success.

"I think people are getting tired of just playing the same thing over and over," said Mr Roby.

He said he hoped people tried Dishonored "for the fact that it's trying to do something a little different than those other games."

Wait a minute...

Well, you probably have some insight on that but I think as long as the game is good, whether it’s a new IP or not, if the game is good, it gets a good review and it’s marketed properly people will want to look at it,” said Roby.

So obviously, if a game is good, whether it's a sequel or not people will buy it. People want good games. Dah?

“Specifically now, because it’s been a few years where we’ve only got sequels of sequels of sequels of sequels. I think people are getting tired of just playing the same thing over and over.”

If the game is good then why does it matter?

Comment by DICE:

But some of them are big and some of them are small, and some people disagree, saying, 'That's not an innovation!' and it's like, 'No, maybe not for you, but for the people playing the game it's a big thing.'"

I can't help but be a little cautious of a world without publisher. If you bombard a market with brands no one cares for or likes or can associate with, I don't see how that would be beneficial for the industry. It's a market dictated by the consumer. Maybe designers and developers need to suck it up and accept that?

He basically admitted that as long as the game is good, people will buy it. Then it shouldn't matter if there are sequels.

I can't tell if he's making out that consumers are dumb or not.
Publishers are to scared to make risk to publish a new IP because it could be a big win or fail for the company but we must blame the consumers who continue to buy them. Customers afraid spending alot of money on a game they never heard about then chooses a game with a familar title/franchise thinking they are confident this game guaranteed to be money well spent because they enjoyed the previous title which he/she chooses instead thus encourages publishers to release sequels just because it's still selling and consumers want more.

Pretty much. We should probably be holding consumers accountable for buying the products more than we should the publishers for simply feeding the needs and wants of the market.
It's almost as if having a 2,3,4 behind a game title encourages people to buy them, because they think, oh, this looks like a quality successful series.
