OnLive is bankrupt and sold, service will continue

Cloud-based gaming service OnLive is bankrupt and "no longer exists" as a business, but has been acquired by a wealthy business man who intends to form a new company to continue operations.

"I wanted to send a note that by the end of the day today, OnLive as an entity will no longer exist. Unfortunately, my job and everyone else's was included," said an email sent to employees, reports CVG.

It explained that a new company is being established to take over.

"A new company will be formed and the management of the company will be in contact with you about the current initiatives in place, including the titles that will remain on the service."

CEO Steve Perlman revealed to Joystiq that high operating costs ultimately lead to the company's demise.

"There's no way to exactly estimate how many servers we'd need. So we literally bought thousands of them, and all the equipment and networks to go with it," he said.

The service is likely to continue, as it is believed to have been bought by one venture capitalist, but his exact identity has not been revealed to the public.

All staff were let go on Friday, but a select few will be rehired as part of a new company that plans to keep OnLive operational, at least in the short term.

It's not really the end of onLive if the name and the service continues.

People arent 100% or commited to Cloud Based gaming as not everyone has an uber fast internet connection or just any internet at all. :S
Said it before and I'll say it again, NO SYMPATHY WHEN YOU DONT EVEN LET ME BUY IT THEN COMPLAIN NO ONE BOUGHT IT!
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Guess Sony are fortunate that they bought Gaikai instead.

probably a good reason why they went with gaikai then onlive.. though it would have been a good get out for the previous owners of onLive - probably asking for too much as well and Sony probably saw their business plan a mile away... maybe :P
Hang on. Didn't OUYA have a deal with Onlive or am I mistaken :(
OnLive was planning (working on?) an Ouya port of the service.

The end of the business and everyone was fired :P

I doubt it'll last long. It clearly costs too much for what it makes.

That's got nothing to do with it though.

OnLive was basically a trailblazing service that was always expected to run at a loss in order to establish the technology. "Bankrupt" doesn't mean it didn't have a consumer base or that people didn't like the technology. It basically means it was relinquishing its debts.

Rumour has it that it filed for bankruptcy so as to relinquish employee equity payments, which essentially means it can still run without having to pay back the salary owed to former employees.

Cloud gaming is coming.
