Free-to-play has certainly captured the PC gaming market by force, and now Blizzard are considering the business model for StarCraft 2's multiplayer.
Speaking at the Valencia eSports Congress panel, Lead Designer Dustin Browder stated that they were looking at the business model, however the company still holds some concerns.
We don't know how we would monetize it. While it might be good fun for me to play against someone with only half the units available to them, that's not going to be an enjoyable experience for them."
It will be interesting to see how Blizzard takew this idea moving forward as they get ready to release StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm sometime rather soon.
